Best family destinations and attractions in Europe

There might be a list of places you want to visit, but is there enough there for kids to do too? Finding a holiday destination that ticks all the boxes for everyone in the family can be tricky, but here are four of the best family friendly destinations and attractions in Europe.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is the stuff of fairy tales, with its castles, brightly coloured buildings and breathtaking scenery. There’s no shortage of things to do either. You can take a boat ride on the old canals, go shopping in the old streets, eat in traditional restaurants and that’s just for starters. Proper family entertainment can be found at the Tivoli theme park, which also has some impressive gardens and a firework show on a weekend. There is also a huge aquarium, zoo, and a whole host of museums including the Children’s Museum.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

It might be a city for stag and hen parties and be more associated with raucous behaviour, but Amsterdam is an incredibly family friendly place. You can rent bicycles relatively cheaply to get around or take a tour on the canal network. There are a wealth of museums including one dedicated to Anne Frank and Tropen where the roof becomes a beach during the summer. There is a park where kids can paddle or swim and there are so many great places to eat that you’ll have difficulty choosing one.

Paris, France

Paris might make you think of romantic breaks with your partner, but Europe’s most visited city offers something for everyone. Steeped in culture, there are many kid friendly museums and the architecture is simply breathtaking. You can of course go to the top of the Eiffel Tower and visit the Louvre, but kids will probably be much more keen to visit the nearby Disneyland Paris.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Easily the most expensive city on this list and probably the furthest away too, Reykjavik is a great family break and one for lovers of the outdoors. Whale watching, bathing in hot springs, pony trekking and walks up mountains are just a few of the ways of enjoying Iceland’s fantastic nature. There are also museums and Viking experiences for if the weather isn’t too great and who knows? You might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

London, England

It has to be literally impossible to be bored in London. There is literally a limitless amount of attractions for everybody. From riding on the Underground to looking at Buckingham Palace, from the London Eye to the Tower of London, there is something for everyone here. There are more museums than you can shake a stick at – the Science Museum is free and has an impressive interactive area where kids can learn in a fun way. And of course for kids there’s also the association of London with Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Paddington Bear and Harry Potter – you can even get your picture taken at Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross Station.
